Trump 'must make cost of victory too high for Putin'

Trump can end the war in Ukraine by driving up the cost of victory for Putin so it becomes insurmountable, the former secretary general of Nato has said.

Jens Stoltenberg said the quickest way to end the war is to lose - but that would not bring peace.

He told Sky News: "I don't think we can change Putin's mind - he still wants to control Ukraine - but I do think that we can change his calculus so that the price he has to pay for that is too high."

Stoltenberg said this could be achievable if the US and Nato send more weapons to Ukraine "so they can strengthen their position on the battlefield, and therefore also strengthen their hand at the future negotiating table".
