THIS is the bizarre moment Joe Biden started his farewell speech before being told to stop in his first post-president gaffe.

The former president also asked which way he should exit the stage as he appeared clueless on stage following the handover of power to Trump.

Biden's presidency was marked by senior moments as the 82-year-old made weird comments, walked in the wrong direction, and mixed up names.

After taking the stage at Joint Base Andrews on Monday, Biden leaned into the microphone to begin his speech as the music wound down.

But the music was just slowing down to change - with the band beginning the Star Spangled banner.

With Biden having to walk away from the mic when he recognised the first few notes playing.

WELCOME TRUMP

After the American national anthem played Biden addressed the waiting members of his administration.

The former president said: "I'm deeply moved by all we all did for this country. I really mean it.

"It's been the honour of my life to serve as your president.

";We got a lot more to do," he says, adding that while he is leaving office he is not "leaving the flight".

After finishing his speech, Biden seemed to look confused as he turned his head right before asking: "Can I walk this way?" .

He then started to look off the stage before finally leaving the hall as fans shouted "please stop".

'WE HAVE A LOT MORE TO DO'

"Folks, I came to thank you. You know, I don't think we couldn't have done anything we did without you," Biden told supporters, before he acknowledged Harris, her husband , and his cabinet members.

"Jill and I are forever grateful to you, I mean that. We're genuinely grateful.

"It's because of you, and I mean it sincerely from the bottom of my heart. Because of you, we got so much done for all Americans.

"Thank you, thank you, thank you, for the sacrifices you've made, I mean it. For being part of this journey. Everyday I am deeply moved by what we did for this country."

Biden took a swipe at his successor's inauguration remarks, telling his constituents there is still "a lot to do."

"We have a lot more to do. We heard the inaugural address today," said the former president, before making the religious sign of the cross gesture to the delight of his supporters.

";I know from many years of experience there are ups and downs but we have to stay with it.

"We are leaving office but we're not leaving the fight. You're smart, you're skilled, and you're passionate.

"Let me close where I began, my sincere gratitude and I really mean it from the bottom of my heart.

"I've been doing this for 50 years, you're the best group of people. It's been the honor of my life to serve as your president."

The crowd erupted in a "Thank you, Joe" chant as the Bidens walked off the podium and greeted his cabinet members before boarding Air Force One.

The Bidens will travel to Santa Ynez, , where he will begin his post-presidency life.

It was likely the final speech of his five-decade-long political career.
