Nigerian authorities have now warned that the consulates are in the sights of extremists in West Africa.

A statement from Nigerian security forces said: "The group had perfected plans to attack the UK and American Embassies and other western interests in Abuja."

The plotters were arrested on March 25 and 26.

Another Islamist is believed to have confessed details of the plot.

The British High Commission and U.S. embassy in Abuja did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Boko Haram is allied with ISIS extremists in Syria and Iraq.

In 2011 the group attacked the U.N.'s Nigeria headquarters in Abuja with a car bomb that detonated in the reception area, killing at least 21 people.

It has killed more than 20,000 people and forced more than two million to flee their homes since 2009 in an insurgency aimed at creating an Islamic state in the northeast of Africa's most populous nation.

The group - which name translates as 'Western education is forbidden' - is notorious for the kidnap of nearly 300 Nigerian schoolgirls.

Of those, 57 were able to escape with 21 more released last October.
