News of the bizarre incident comes as the airlines faces intense criticism for overbooking a flight then having airport officers violently drag a Dr David Dao out of his seat to make room.

It occurred on a flight from Houston to Mexico after Mr Bell and his wife were returning home from a relaxing two-week holiday in Mexico, reported.

Richard said it was a stowaway in someone's luggage, was honey-coloured and measured about an inch-and-a-half in length.

Linda said: "I look down and I thought, ‘aw, it kind of looks like a little lobster."

It fell first onto his head, then his plate and stung him when he tried to pick it up. Another passenger then stomped on it and threw it in a bin, the paper reported.

Emergency services were then called aboard when the flight landed.

Passenger John Rogers said: "The pilot announced it.

"Because the passenger was bitten, emergency services, the fire department and police boarded the plane."

A spokesperson for United Airlines told that the airline crew consulted with a physician on the ground who guided them through the situation.

The spokesperson added: "Medical personnel met the aircraft after it arrived in Calgary."

United Airlines is currently embroiled in controversy after it emerged Dr Dao will need reconstructive surgery after the incident on board the jet.

His lawyer said he intends to sue the airline after losing two teeth, breaking his nose and suffering concussion in the brutal removal.

It occurred after he refused to ";voluntarily" give up his seat to a staff member after the company overbooked the flight.
