Neville, 42, took to Twitter to vent his anger at being turned away at the gate at London Euston for not having a receipt.

He asked the train manager if he could buy another for the 9.20am service to Manchester.

But the Sky Sports pundit claims he was told to go to the main desk - despite the manager apparently having a ticket machine on him.

Neville tweeted: "You are a joke @VirginTrains!!"

He added: “You’ve got a train manager called Simon who apparently can’t sell tickets at the gate?

"Now I’ve missed the train!!”

He also posted a photo of the tickets, adding: "@VirginTrains that’s what the machine gave me (apparently one missing ) he wouldn’t sell me another.

“That’s what the machine gave me. Simon said can’t let you on.

"I said I will buy another now then! No go to the office.

"He had a machine!!”

Football fans stuck the boot into the ex-Man United and England defender after his Twitter rant.

Neville, 42, also posted a photo of the tickets, adding: '@VirginTrains that’s what the machine gave me ( apparently one missing ) he wouldn’t sell me another'

Sportshub365 joked: "He was a City fan Gary.

"He is on Facebook now telling all his mates how he kicked you off the train.”

Kevin Gower added: "To be fair, if i was that train manager, i wouldn't have let you board the train without a receipt either."

Another wrote: ";You lost the ability to train a long time ago @GNev2."

Virgin Trains replied to Neville, asking for more information so they could investigate.

He is believed to have finally boarded the train back to Manchester 20 minutes later.

A Virgin Trains spokesperson said: "We always love to see football legends on our trains.

"But regardless of how many trophies they've won, all our customers need a valid ticket for travel and should leave plenty of time to board their train."
