Astonished kids get heads shaved as they start life as monks ahead of Buddha’s birthday

“I ONLY asked for a bit off the top!” — this astonished lad can’t believe his own reflection after having his head shaved.

Eight kids got the extreme haircut as they experienced the life of a Buddhist monk.

Some children seemed thrilled with their new look while others responded to their hair cut with tears.

The children spend two weeks at the monastery learning about Buddhism and participating in other activities such as football games, according to .

Their stay in the Jogyesa Temple in Seoul, South Korea, comes ahead of Buddha’s birthday celebrations on May 3.

Despite only 23 per cent of South  Koreans identifying as Buddhists, Buddha's birthday is a public holiday marked with lantern festivals.

Temples open their doors to visitors with free tea and a meal of rice and vegetables called bibimbab, reports the .
