A mob of 200 people were said to have hijacked a peacefully rally organised by activists who had gathered at the Place de la Republique before marching.

People dressed in black got amongst the demo and launched the assault on police at the Place de la Bastille.

Elsewhere in the city, more than 100 wives and partners of police protested against attacks on officers following Thursday's attack.

And earlier today, panic erupted at Paris’s Gard du Nord train station after a man wielding a knife was arrested by armed cops.

France is currently observing pre-election silence ahead of the first round of voting as crowds marched through the capitals streets rejecting the candidates policies.

This comes after Marine Le Pen's campaign co-ordinator claimed the country could break into civil war if terror attacks continue to batter France.

ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack on Thursday, after the killer got out of a car next to a parked police van and opened fire through the window before officers returned fire and shot him dead.

Traffic officer Jugele was yesterday named as the policeman killed in the shooting. A female foreign tourist was also wounded.

Karim Cheurfi, 39, killed traffic cop Xavier Jugele, 37, and injured two more after opening fire with a Kalashnikov on the the Champs-Elysées.

He had been jailed for trying to kill two policemen and this year was found with knives and masks he claimed was for a carnival.
