Support for Tories surges in Wales as new poll projects they will poach 10 seats from Labour on way to a whopping majority of 150
Another of the party’s heartlands looks set to crumble as Jeremy Corbyn drives them towards electoral oblivion
THE TORIES have seen a surge in support in Wales after a new poll projects they will poach 10 seats from Labour.
The survey for has them on 40%, up 12 points, and would give Theresa May’s party a majority in the principality for the first time since 1918 and a whopping overall majority of 150.
For Jeremy Corbyn the result would be a disaster, and further evidence he is leading Labour to electoral oblivion at the June 8 snap election.
This is also the first time pollsters YouGov has had the Conservatives ahead in Wales, leaping to a 10 point lead as their main rival falls to just 30% support.
It would mean they would leapfrog Labour to hold 21 of the 40 seats, with Labour back to just 15.
Those Tory gains include Bridgend, which has been Labour for 30 years, both Newport seats and two constituencies in Cardiff.
The poll suggests support for Plaid Cymru and the Liberal Democrats in Wales will stay roughly the same, and both will keep their respective three and one seats next month.

The surge in support from Mrs May comes mainly from Ukip voters turning to the Tories, as the anti-EU party sees support drop by 7 points to just 6%.
This is in line with polling from Opinium at the weekend which showed voters are leaving Paul Nuttall’s party in droves for the Conservatives since she called the snap election.
It is further good news for the Prime Minister after a survey yesterday revealed her party has the chance to take a dozen seats off the SNP in the election.
With several nationwide polls putting the Tories at least 20 points clear of Labour it means they could return to the House of Commons with a much higher majority than their current 17 - to a possible 150.
And while Mr Corbyn is up in Scotland giving a speech and Lib Dem leader Tim Farron was holding a rally in south London, Mrs May was taking a day off from national campaigning.
