DONALD Trump has said the UN Security Council must be prepared to impose new sanctions on North Korea – amid fears the hermit state is planning a sixth nuclear bomb test as early as today. 

Speaking at a meeting with UN Security Council Ambassadors, which included Russian and Chinese officials, Trump said: “The status quo in North Korea is also unacceptable.”

The US President added: "The council must be prepared to impose additional and stronger sanctions on North Korean nuclear and ballistic missile programs."

The meeting, which took place at the White House on Monday, saw Trump insist North Korea poses a “real threat to the world, whether we want to talk about it or not”.

He went on: “North Korea is a big world problem and it's a problem that we have to finally solve.

, who have cited US officials as sources, the tougher sanctions in question could include an oil embargo, banning North Korea’s airline, the interception of cargo ships, and punishing any Chinese banks and other nations doing business with Pyongyang.

The news comes as the White House announced the entire US Senate is being summoned for a briefing on North Korea.

The briefing will involve 100 senators, and will be held on Wednesday.

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson is also set to chair a special ministerial meeting of the Security Council on North Korea on Friday, which is expected to give members the chance to discuss existing sanctions, and "show their resolve to respond to further provocations with appropriate new measures".

Meanwhile, the White House revealed Trump and German Chancellor Angela Merkel discussed the “urgent security challenge” posed by North Korea over the phone on Monday.

on Monday, US ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, said the White House and international community were maintaining pressure on Kim Jong-un, but “not trying to pick a fight with him.”

When asked by reporters whether a pre-emptive strike was possible, the ambassador said: "We are not going to do anything unless he gives us reason to do something."

"If you see him attack a military base, if you see some sort of intercontinental ballistic missile, then obviously we're going to do that.

“But right now, we're saying 'don't test, don't use nuclear missiles, don't try and do any more actions', and I think he's understanding that.
