Esther McVey selected for Tatton at General Election 2017, fighting for George Osborne’s old seat after he quit to edit Evening Standard

OUSTED former Tory minister Esther McVey has been selected by the Conservatives to fight George Osborne's old seat in Tatton after he quit to edit The Evening Standard.

Ms McVey, who attended Cabinet as employment minister in the Coalition government, lost her seat in the 2015 general election.

But the former TV presenter has spoken of her wish to return to Parliament and was even eyeing up David Cameron’s Oxfordshire seat.

Following the new the former Chancellor tweeted: "Huge congratulations to @EstherMcVey1, new Tatton PPC. A real star. I couldn't have a better successor. A one-woman Northern Powerhouse."

Speaking on Sky News’ last year Ms McVey signalled she would welcome an invitation from the local association in Cameron's former seat of Witney.

Ms McVey, who represented the Conservatives in Wirral West from 2010 until 2015, has been chosen to contest the Tatton seat following the ex-chancellor's decision to quit Parliament to focus on his other jobs - including editing the London Evening Standard.

Former broadcaster Ms McVey will defend a Tory majority of more than 18,000 in the Cheshire constituency at the General Election on June 8.
