But he said people should now vote Labour in the desperate hope of ensuring a “strong opposition” to Theresa May.

He told Sky News: “If the polls are right we know who is going to be Prime Minister on June 9. That’s not the issue.”

"I think the real issue is the blank cheque.”

It came as the RMT militant train union backed a “maximum vote” for Labour – insisting Jeremy Corbyn was the “genuine article”.

A poll on Wednesday claimed Theresa May was now more popular than any PM in the past forty years – including Mr Blair at the height of New Labour.

Mr Blair insisted he wasn’t telling people it was pointless voting Labour.

But he said: “I think the most powerful argument for Labour in this election, the most powerful argument for Labour is to say it’s important for our democracy that the Government is held to account and needs a strong opposition.”

At the weekend, Mr Blair said Brits should vote tactically – and should even considering voting Tory – to challenge a ‘Hard Brexit’.

Mr Corbyn insisted the election was still there to be won.

The Labour leader said: “I’m out on the streets and the doorsteps and the meeting halls every day and that’s not what I’m finding.

“I’m finding the enthusiasm of people at the prospect of doing things differently to work for everyone and I’m enjoying it.”

But Lib Dem chief Tim Farron branded Labour the “worst opposition in human history”.

Campaigning in Cambridge, he said Labour had “copped out over Brexit and everything else”.

He added there was “nothing more dangerous to a democracy than a Government with an enormous majority and an appalling opposition”.
