Boeing 767 lands safely after aborting flight to New York over reported 'maintenance issue'
A TRANSATLANTIC passenger jet was forced to turn back to Manchester Airport after declaring a mid-air emergency.
American Airlines flight 211 to New York JKF turned round over the Irish Sea half an hour after take-off.
Manchester Airport confirmed the plane had landed safely.
Reports said the crew declared an emergency related to a "maintenance issue".
The Boeing 767 took off from Manchester at 10.15am and was due to land in New York seven hours later but turned back 30 minutes into the journey.
Video online showed emergency vehicles with flashing lights following the plane after it touched down.
The airline tweeted the jet "returned due to maintenance", adding: "Our team will get everything squared and be wheels up again as soon as possible."
