NUTTALL MAKES MP BID

UKIP leader Paul Nuttall to stand in Lincolnshire seat of Boston and Skegness in the general election

Boston saw 75% of its residents vote for Brexit in last year's referendum on the European Union with seat currently held by a Conservative MP

UKIP leader Paul Nuttall will stand to be an MP in the forthcoming general election.

The 40-year-old, from Liverpool, will contest the seat of Boston and Skegness in Lincolnshire.

Currently the area's representative in Parliament is the Conservative's Matt Warman MP.

Mr Nuttall's decision has ended days of speculation as to whether he would run in the election.

Last Sunday he gave a non-committal answer to The Andrew Marr Show.

He was also evasive when asked if he would stand earlier this week when the United Kingdom Independence Party kicked off its election campaign.

The party pledged to ban the burqa in an attempt to improve the integration of Muslims in British society.

The garment is a full-face veil that is worn by some particularly devout women who practice Islam.

Mr Nuttall previously stood in the Stoke-on-Trent Central by-election in February 2017 but was unsuccessful.

He finished second behind Labour's Gareth Snell with 5,233 votes - 24.7% of the vote.

Mr Snell won with 7,853 votes, 37.1% of the ballots counted, in a constituency that saw a turnout of just 38.2%.

Boston saw 75.6% of its residents vote for Brexit in last year's referendum on continued membership of the European Union.

Leaving the EU was the primary reason in the founding of UKIP and, following the successful referendum result, popular leader Nigel Farage stepped down.
