The murder took place just three days after David Byrne was slain at the city's Regency Hotel and was the first of ten retaliatory killings carried out by the Kinahan cartel in the weeks that followed.

It was witnessed by Eddie’s wife Margaret, who fled out the back of the house when she heard the first gunshots, before running back in to see her hubby’s feet as he lay lifeless on the floor.

In their new book The Cartel, Irish Sun journalists Owen Conlon and Stephen Breen reveal the circle of treachery that sparked the gangland feud.

Following the Kinahan’s decision to murder troublesome gangster Eamon Dunne, a breakdown in trust spiralled into today's bloody feud which has already claimed 11 lives.

How innocent Eddie Hutch was caught in the cross fire

Daniel Kinahan decided to eliminate Dunne due to the carnage he was causing in Dublin and the disruption to one of their key drug markets.

Dunne, who had planned his own funeral, was shot dead in April 2010.

Hours afterwards, one of the hit team was pulled over by gardai and later rang Daniel to tell how the cops confiscated his mobile, “took out all the numbers and rang them”.

Daniel told him: “If I were you, I’d leave the country tomorrow morning. Things are going to get very messy there.”

Daniel then rang another heavy who he employed to guard his mother Jean’s flat and warned: “This is going to change a lot of things anyway, so don’t talk much on the phone because now they’ll be tapping and listening in on everyone, because anything anyone says, they will say it was the motive.”

Dunne’s criminal associates were well aware who had ordered the slaying and approached cartel members in Dublin asking them to request Daniel pay for Dunne’s funeral.

Daniel responded: “If we do that, the papers will blame us for carrying it out, you know? I haven’t called them yet for the moment, because I haven’t had to, because if they start mouthing off, I’ll ring them and tell them to shut their faces.”
