EMMANUEL Macron has been caught practicing his victory speech on live TV, seemingly unaware he was on the air.
The presidential election winner appeared standing at a podium as he prepared to address the world following his triumph over his rival Marine Le Pen.
But instead of commencing his speech, the nervous-looking En Marche leader sipped his water while carrying out a sound check.
When he finally spoke, Macron tried to reach out to those who supported his opponent, promising to heal France's divisions.
He acknowledged divisions in society had driven people to "vote to the extreme" but said "a new page" of France's history was beginning.
In a solemn address from his campaign headquarters, he said he had seen the "anger, anxiety and doubts" of many voters.
He said: “I will fight with all my strength against the divisions that are undermining us.”
The vicious election campaign exposed deep economic and social divisions in France, as well as tensions provoked by identity and immigration.
And Macron – the youngest president in France’s history at 39 – must now try to heal those rifts to move the country forward.
Thousands of flag-waving supporters gave the centrist candidate a rapturous welcome as he strode into the courtyard of the Louvre museum after his decisive win.
The glass pyramid in the world-famous courtyard glowed golden as Macron made a solitary walk to a stage in front, looking serious.
"Tonight, France won," he cried to the crowds who yelled with joy.
Many of the mainly youthful supporters were wearing the t-shirt of Macron's centrist movement En Marche ("On the Move").
Some supporters scaled lampposts to get a better view of Macron, who was savouring a thumping victory estimated at around 65 to 35 per cent over Le Pen.
An instant street party had erupted outside the Louvre after the results were announced.
Cars honked as passengers waved French flags, while the crowds chanted "President Macron, President Macron!" from the pavements.
