He confessed to pinning up the picture of the Conservative PM along with those of other icons such as US president John F Kennedy.

But he scoffed at claims that he also wore an “I love Maggie” sticker at school.

Mr Farron, who was being interviewed by ITV, said: “I had all sorts of weird icons that I was into.

"I had pictures of strange sort of Left-wing politicians.”

He admitted: “I remember I had a Mrs Thatcher picture. I had a John F Kennedy picture.”

The Lib Dems also face controversy after ITV use the interview to speak to a gay friend of Mr Farron – a committed Christian slammed recently for refusing to say for days if he believed gay sex was a sin.

The friend – Ian – insists he came out to the Lib Dem chief when he was 19 and that Mr Farron “isn’t homophobic and is absolutely liberal in his values”.

Challenged why he didn’t come out sooner to say he didn’t believe gay sex was a sin, Mr Farron insists it wasn’t right for people to pry about private beliefs.

He added that on abortion, he supported the law as it stands.
