Group of pals dress as characters from Peter Kay’s Phoenix Nights sitcom for birthday pub crawl
Josh Galea-Hughes and nine mates spent a fortnight planning their costumes including wheelchair-bound club owner Brian Potter and penis bouncy castle Sammy Snake
TEN sitcom fans dressed up as characters from Peter Kay's Phoenix Nights for a pub crawl – with one lad spending the whole night in a wheelchair as club owner Brian Potter.
Josh Galea-Hughes and nine of his mates spent a fortnight planning their costumes, including one who dressed up as the show's penis-shaped bouncy castle Sammy Snake.
Another pair went as bouncers Max and Paddy while one lad had to carry a keyboard with him as band musician Alan.
The lads set out on a crawl in Gateshead and Newcastle to celebrate Josh's 25th birthday on Saturday.
He said: "The reactions we got were absolutely hilarious. We're all massive Peter Kay fans and we'd been planning this for a while.
"A lot of us were down in charity shops buying our outfits and we did our own makeup as well. We had girls and bouncers asking for pictures all night.
"One of the lads, Callum, wanted to go the whole hog and replicate Brian Potter. He borrowed his auntie's brand new wheelchair for the evening so we had to make sure we looked after it.
"It was actually a bit of an eye-opener because not everywhere has disabled access but there was only maybe one place that turned us away.
"We're big fans of Phoenix Nights, we've all got the DVDs and we're constantly quoting lines to each other so we thought it would be the perfect fancy dress. Everyone really put the effort in."
Josh went as hapless club compere Jerry St Clair - dressed as Gay Satan from one episode.
He posted a selfie of his face and neck the still stained from the heavy red makeup the next day with the caption: "Was funny tho".
The other sitcom characters on the bar crawl were club DJ Ray Von, handyman Young Kenny with tiger face paint, barman Spencer (dressed as Gary Glitter), and fire safety official Keith Lard.
Technician Josh, of Washington, Tyne and Wear, said: "I couldn't believe the amount of attention we got.
"I thought because it hasn't been on TV in a few years nobody would know who we were, but everyone did. People were saying it was one of the best group efforts they'd ever seen.
"Stephen, who went as the keyboard player Alan, even learnt the theme tune and played it in the taxi. We were all in stitches.
"There were a couple of pubs during the day that still had children in and we were getting a few dodgy looks having a giant inflatable penis sat at the table.
"It was pretty messy in the end and generally a great laugh. It was pretty funny watching Callum in his wheelchair on the dancefloor.
"I don't know how we'll ever top this night out."
