RAPED AND FED TO DOGS

Jilted boyfriend ‘gang-rapes ex-girlfriend with six other men, drives over her head and leaves her for dogs to eat in India’

Police in the northern state of Haryana said the victim, 23, was 'brutalised' in a 'horrific' way after telling the men she would report the rape

A JILTED boyfriend has been arrested after allegedly kidnapping and raping his ex before smashing her head in with bricks, running her over with a car and leaving her body to be eaten by dogs.

Police in the northern state of Haryana said the victim, 23, was abducted by her former partner, Sumit Kumar, and one of his pals, named only as Vikas, in the latest shocking case of sexual violence in the country.

The woman, a labourer, was taken by car from near her home in Sonipat to the nearby city of Rohtak, where they gang-raped her, according to police superintendent Ashwin Shenvi.

Shenvi said: "When she said to them she would complain, they hammered her skull in with bricks.

"The way that they brutalised her is horrific."

The men are then reported to have run over her head with a car in order to conceal her identity.

She was found dumped in an isolated industrial area four days later, on Friday, when a local resident noticed stray dogs nibbling at her mangled body.

Jagjeet Singh, spokesman for Sonipat city police in Haryana, told reporters: "We have arrested two men under various sections – murder and rape also.

"The main accused, Sumit, and she (the victim) were in a relationship but she didn't want to marry him and he lost it – he wanted revenge."

The mother of the victim had previously made a complaint against one of the accused for pressuring her daughter into marrying him, but the disagreement was settled between the two parties, Shenvi said.

Kumar and Vikas were arrested in Sonipat town, while six others are being investigated after the woman’s mum accused them of involvement, Shenvi added yesterday.

Singh said a probe was now underway, adding that the victim’s post-mortem showed she had been drugged or sedated during the horrific attack.

Women's rights activists and politicians have demanded justice for the victim, whose case echoed the murderous 2012 sex attack on a student in the Indian capital that sparked mass street protests.

Opposition leader Sonia Gandhi said in a statement on Saturday: "This savage and bone-chilling incident has shocked the conscience of the nation, reminding each one of us about the crying need for revisiting the important issue of women's safety and security."

Haryana state chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar called the assault "unfortunate", according to the Press Trust of India.

India has a gruesome record on rape, with New Delhi alone registering 2,199 rape cases in 2015 – an average of six a day.

Nearly 40,000 rape cases are reported every year but the real number is thought to be much higher, with victims wary of how their complaints will be dealt with or the social stigma attached to sex crimes.

There is also disillusion with the country’s sluggish legal system.
