Druggies may soon be allowed to get their gear tested at music festivals in radical ‘safety’ plan
Cops are being consulted to see if pilot scheme from last year's Secret Garden Party should be extended across the country
FESTIVAL-goers may soon be allowed to test their drugs at some of Britain’s biggest events.
A pioneering safety scheme would see them present a portion of the substance at a tent, where scientists would confirm the content.
The sample would then be destroyed. The system is poised to launch at the Reading and Leeds Festivals plus up to eight more live music events.
Melvin Benn, head of Live Nation subsidiary Festival Republic, detailed the plan and said he was now waiting for police to confirm their support. He added: “We’ll see it this year for definite. At Leeds, I’m pretty certain.”
The tent would be run by The Loop, a non-profit drug and alcohol health service. The scheme was trialled at a last year’s Secret Garden party in Cambridgeshire.
The Loop founder Fiona Measham called the move “radical” adding: “It’s exciting that the police are prioritising health and safety over criminal justice at festivals.”
