Donald Trump slams London mayor Sadiq Khan and calls on people to ‘stop being politically correct’ after London Bridge terror attack
DONALD Trump has lashed out at London mayor Sadiq Khan over his reaction to the London Bridge terror attack and called on people to “stop being politically correct”.
The US President launched a scathing attack on Twitter, twisting Mr Khan's words to make it seem as though he said there is “no reason to be alarmed”.
He tweeted: “At least 7 dead and 48 wounded in terror attack and Mayor of London says there is "no reason to be alarmed."
Trump appeared to be referring to a statement by Mr Khan earlier this morning in which the London mayor said the General Election should go ahead as planned on June 8.
The statement did not include the phrase "there is no reason to be alarmed" but it did condemn the attack in the strongest possible terms and asked people to remain vigilant.
Mr Khan said: “Elections are a wonderful thing and that’s one of the things that these terrorists hate.
"One of the things that we can do to show we’re not going to be cowed is by voting on Thursday and making sure that we understand the importance of our democracy, our civil liberties, and our human rights.”
After Trump’s tweet, a spokesperson for Mr Khan said the mayor is "too busy to respond".
“The mayor is busy working with the police, emergency services and the government to coordinate the response to this horrific and cowardly terrorist attack and provide leadership and reassurance to Londoners and visitors to our city," he said.
“He has more important things to do than respond to Donald Trump’s ill-informed tweet that deliberately takes out of context his remarks urging Londoners not to be alarmed when they saw more police – including armed officers – on the streets.”
Trump also urged people the “stop being politically correct”.
He tweeted: “We must stop being politically correct and get down to the business of security for our people. If we don't get smart it will only get worse.”
“Whatever the United States can do to help out in London and the U. K., we will be there - WE ARE WITH YOU. GOD BLESS!”
He later added: “Do you notice we are not having a gun debate right now? That's because they used knives and a truck!”
Trump also called for his controversial so-called Muslim travel ban following the depraved terror attack in London.
The President took to Twitter in the hours after the sick assault on the UK capital – which left seven dead – to urge the US reconsider his failed proposal.
He tweeted: “We need to be smart, vigilant and tough. We need the courts to give us back our rights. We need the Travel Ban as an extra level of safety!" he said in the other.”
Minutes before that post, the brash billionaire also wrote a message of support to the UK and its capital city.
He tweeted: “Whatever the United States can do to help out in London and the U.K., we will be there - WE ARE WITH YOU. GOD BLESS!"

However, the acting United States ambassador to the United Kingdom split with Trump on Sunday by praising Sadiq Khan's response to the attacks in England.
"I commend the strong leadership of the @MayorofLondon as he leads the city forward after this heinous attack," Lewis Lukens tweeted from the US embassy's account.
Earlier this week, the Trump administration asked the Supreme Court to immediately reinstate its ban on travellers from six mostly Muslim countries and refugees from anywhere in the world.
The Republican administration argues that the US will be safer if the policy is put in place.
Lower courts have blocked the divisive policy, citing various reasons including statements Trump made during the 2016 campaign particularly his call to “ban all Muslims” from entering the country.
The legal fight pits the president's authority over immigration against what lower courts have said is a policy that purported to be about national security but was intended to target a religious group.
Trump later called Prime Minister Theresa May to offer condolences.
The White House said the president "praised the heroic response of police and other first responders and offered the full support of the US government in investigating and bringing those responsible for these heinous acts to justice."
At 10:08pm on Saturday evening, three sick terrorists wearing stab-proof vests drove a van into pedestrians at 50mph on London Bridge before attacking revellers with hunting knives.
Six people have died and at least 48 have been left wounded. Staff at a packed pub locked the doors as the gang tried to smash their way in. One man was stabbed five times.
Assistant Commissioner of Met Police Mark Rowley confirmed that all three of the depraved attackers were shot and killed within eight minutes of the first call to emergency services.
