BRITAIN's top police officer has praised the "extraordinary bravery" of people who risked their lives to help those injured during last night's London Bridge terror attack.

Metropolitan Police Commissioner Cressida Dick slammed the “appalling and tragic” attack after a van ploughed into pedestrians then drove to Borough - where suspects ran into crowds and started stabbing people.

The death toll has risen to seven with 48 others injured in Saturday night’s attack, she revealed.

Three suspects were shot dead within eight minutes of the first 999 call being received.

Comissioner Dick paid tribute to her officers, emergency services and members of the public “ran towards danger” and “risked their lives” to save others.

She also praised police - on and off duty - who risked their lives by rushing to confront the attackers.

Speaking outside New Scotland Yard, she said: "In the early hours of this morning I visited one of the hospitals in London.

"There, I heard truly remarkable stories and extraordinarily brave actions by officers on and off duty first on the scene.

"I heard of colleagues of other emergency services and members of the public who ran towards the danger as the incident unfolded.

"Many, many people risked their own safety to help others and treat those seriously injured and indeed to confront suspects involved.

"The courage of those people during and following the attack was extraordinary and I pay tribute to all of them. I’m sure they helped to save lives."

Commissioner Dick says the incident is under control but officers need to continue to conduct a thorough search of the area to make sure all are accounted for.

She said she understood there could be "fear" among Londoners, but added: "The last thing we need is people overreacting or taking out their frustrations on people in other communities or in their own communities."

It comes weeks after the Manchester bombing in which 22 people were killed.

This is the third terror attack in the UK in three months following the car and knife attack in Westminster in March, which left five people dead.

Theresa May declared “enough is enough” and defiantly confirmed Thursday’s General Election will go ahead after chairing a Cobra meeting.
