Buildings were damaged by the force of the impact in the thoroughfare that leads to the town’s High Street.

At its entrance there is even a sign that warns lorry drivers: “Don’t try your luck. You’ll only get stuck”. It contains a photo of a previous incident there.

James Hood, a local town councillor said: “The lorry has taken a corner off one of the nearby buildings and brought a lot of rubble down with it too.

"There are plans between the town and county council to put bollards in the road to deter HGV drivers.”

The vehicle was eventually towed away from the scene and the road reopened later in the afternoon.

A John Lewis spokesman said: "We can confirm that this has now been resolved. We're very sorry for the inconvenience this caused to nearby residents and other drivers, and are thankful to the rescue service for their swift response."

It comes as a shocked woman was left stranded when she found 20,000 bees on her car’s bonnet.

Shirley Taylor discovered the huge swarm had taken up residence inside her Nissan whilst it was parked outside her house.

Thousands of the honey bees have currently settled on the vehicle – leaving her unable to use her vehicle.

The 57-year-old was alerted by a neighbour warning her that her car had been swamped.

She said: “I have no idea where they have come from and why they have chosen my car but it looks like the queen is here and they all follow her.

It follows our report of a dozy driver raced the wrong way down a motorway for 27 miles.
