NORTH Korea has branded the US as a “felonious and lawless gangster state” after alleging American authorities “literally mugged” its diplomats at New York’s JFK Airport.

The hermit kingdom’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs accused officials of forcibly seizing a diplomatic package in “an illegal and heinous act of provocation”.

A statement released through North Korea’s official news agency said: “This mugging act of the US serves as a graphic account telling the world how reckless and despicable the US hostile policy towards the DPRK [Democratic People’s Republic of Korea] has become.”

The rogue nation threatened unspecified “grave consequences” if the US failed to provide “a good explanation of its act of infringement upon the sovereignty of the DPRK and an official apology on behalf of the US government”.

The statement then slammed the United States as a felonious and lawless gangster state”.

It read: “The international community needs to seriously reconsider whether or not New York, where such an outrageous mugging is rampant, is fit to serve as the venue for international meetings.”

North Korea claims its envoys were confronted by more than 20 cops and Homeland Security officers.

It is alleged that they used “physical violence” to snatch the package even though the diplomats had “a valid diplomatic courier certificate”.

North Korea did not detail the contents of the package.

But a spokesperson for the US Department of Homeland Security said: “The package in question had no diplomatic protection from inspection.

“The reported aggression was initiated by the North Koreans.

“The individuals were released without further incident but subsequently refused to board their departing flight without the items that had been seized.”

Last week the UN Security Council expanded targeted sanctions against Kim’s rogue state after its repeated missile tests –  the first such resolution since President Donald Trump took office.

But the secretive state said it “fully rejects” the latest UN sanctions against its citizens as a “hostile act” and will continue its nuclear weapons development without delay.
