He was rushed to hospital for treatment but his injuries were not believed to be life threatening.

Cops revealed they were quizzing a driver in connection with the incident.

On Facebook Ashleigh Allison, thought to be Jacob’s cousin, said: “The person that witnessed the hit-and-run was a 12-year-old boy who is very distressed right now.

“He’s in a lot of shock as it was his wee cousin and he had to watch that.”

The incident happened close to the family home on Springfield Gardens, Inverness on Tuesday night.

Jacob’s parents Jacqui and Stephen rushed to the youngster’s bedside at the city’s Raigmore Hospital.

Local Shona Chisolm said: “I live on this street and the way some people drive round it is disgusting.

“The street is always busy with kids. It should be put to a 20 zone. It’s right next to a kids play park.”

Angry family members launched an appeal on social media to try and track down the driver but got the make of the car wrong.

Jacob’s aunt Michelle Gunn said: “Who in Inverness drives an old shape black Corsa with black wheels? The scum has knocked down my 4 year old nephew and drove off. He is in a critical condition.”

Locals posted details of cars online and it’s thought at least one driver handed himself in to police so he could clear his name.

A police spokesman said they were keen to talk to anyone who saw a black Ford Focus around the time of the hit and run.

Donnie Mackinnon, of the road policing unit, said: “I can confirm a 33-year-old man has been detained and is assisting with our enquiries.”
