TWO Muslim women had water thrown hurled over them in what is being described as a 'fake acid attack' as they stood outside a mosque.

Police are investigating the incident as a suspected racially aggravated assault after thugs threw liquid from a car outside the Bashir Ahmed Masjid mosque in Southampton.

CCTV footage shows the women, dressed in traditional Muslim clothing, wiping themselves down in panic as the black car speeds away.

The women are said to be "shaken" after the incident, which took place at around 2pm on Tuesday.

One of the victims released a statement through the mosque urging others to be on their guard.

The statement said: "Sisters just to warn you to be careful when u are out and about, you all know about the recent acid attacks in London.

"Today my friend and I were standing outside Bashir Masjid in Portswood, waiting to be picked up when a group of men in a black car drove past us and threw water at us.

"We are both OK because it was only water, but if they get away with doing stuff like this then it could embolden them to next time use bleach or acid."

Police confirmed they were treating the incident as a racially aggravated assault.

A Hampshire Constabulary spokeswoman said: "Our investigations are continuing today and we are in contact with the victims who were understandably shaken by this incident.

"The vehicle is described as a black estate car."

The incident comes after a surge in acid attacks across the country, including five attacks which took place inside 90 minutes in East London last week.
