But Tory male candidates were three times more likely to be abused on social media than their female Labour counterparts, the Sheffield University analysis revealed.

They got almost six per cent of abuse compared to just over two per cent for women Labour MPs.

Male Labour MPs put up with just under four per cent while women Tory candidates got slightly less.

But female candidates received more targeted gender abuse like “b*tch” and “witch”.

The most popular phrase directed at male politicians from all parties was predictably “f*** off” with “idiot” a close second and “c***” third.

Women were abused most with the term “kill”, then “f*** off”, “idiot”, “coward” and “c***”.

Labour’s Shadow Home Secretary Diane Abbott spoke out earlier this month to talk about rape and death threats she has receieved and how she was described as an “ugly fat black bitch” and a “n*****”.

Theresa May has now ordered a review into how widespread the problem of intimidation against MPs is.

Researchers from the University of Sheffield and Buzzfeed analysed 840,000 tweets in the run up to June’s snap election.
