John Dixon Hart has been fined £7,000 for trading standards offences after one reviewer wrote "Welcome to Hell" while another said it was "not fit for rats" and others described it as "horrific", "shambolic" and "horrendous".

The establishment had its four-star status revoked six years ago - but owner Hart continued to claim the rating.

He has since pleaded guilty to a charge of advertising and running a guest house below minimum standards and one of using misleading adverts.

Of the 278 reviews on TripAdvisor, 69 per cent rated it as 'terrible' and nine per cent as 'poor' - although six per cent rated it as 'excellent'.

Andy D said: "This is the worst place I have EVER stayed in!!! Didn't expect to find previous guests pubic hair and urine on the toilet! Room stank of something odd, probably something had died in there at some stage...smelt like it was decomposing in a wardrobe or something (didn't look!).

"If after reading this you STILL feel it could be worth the risk, I suggest you either A: give your head a very good shake and think again or B: toss a hand grenade into the room before entering as this will give the appearance of it having been tidied up."

Melissa J wrote: "Finally get into our room, to find a chandelier not secured to the ceiling. Not the worst thing to happen, we all still had a bed... or so we thought. The room was falling to bits!

"The bathroom door handle came off in one friends hand, another friend perched on the end of a bed for it to collapse and another friend fell through one side of the double bed as there were no slats on that side to hold the mattress! We also found a dead slug wrapped in the towel!

Beverley Magistrates' Court heard on Thursday (July 20) how some guests described Mr Hart as "rambling, confused and drunk".

Admitting two trading standards offences, he accepted responsibility and blamed his problems on his drinking because running the hotel overwhelmed him.

He said: "When I took over the guest house from my mother, I didn't realise quite what was involved and I was just overwhelmed with it all.

"I was going through difficult personal problems and a divorce, I was drinking too much, and the whole thing just got on top of me.

"People sometimes think all their Christmasses have come at once when they book - I don't know what they imagine they're going to get.

"Having said that they're getting a fabulous place in a fabulous location."

Hart was first contacted by East Riding Council in 2011 when they became aware of his outdated four-star rating.

Although he removed the Visit England logo, he replaced it with a self-certified four-star rating without any justification.

In 2013, he was handed repeated warnings from the council but ignored all of them.

Mr Hart claimed he was unable to change the 'outdated' rating online because of a broken computer, the court heard.
