Who is Barry Mannakee? Princess Diana’s bodyguard who died in a motorbike accident
Conspiracy theorists have been convinced for 30 years someone else was involved in the Royal Protection Officer's death
THIRTY years ago, a Royal Protection officer and former bodyguard to the Princess of Wales was killed in a horror road smash on a nondescript stretch of the A11 in Essex.
In the years that followed, Barry Mannakee's death sparked a string of conspiracy theories after Diana made the bombshell revelation she believed he had been "bumped off".
The tape was recorded by Diana's voice coach, Peter Settelen, in 1992 and the extraordinary claims have now been thrust back into the limelight after the controversial decision was made to show them for the first time.
Here's all you need to know...
Who was Barry Mannakee?
Mannakee was born on June 1, 1947, in London and was a police officer with the Royal Protection Squad before being assigned to Princess Diana as a bodyguard in 1985.
He was moved in 1986 from his royal duties at Kensington Palace to the Diplomatic Protection Group in central London.
"Combined with historical context and interviews with her closest confidants, this film provides a nuanced, multilayered portrait of the most famous woman in the world and a mother who has shaped the future line of the royal family."
William and Harry spoke at great length about memories of their mother in the ITV documentary Diana, Our Mother, Her Life and Legacy.
