NEW footage shows the moment hero passersby tackled a machete wielding terror suspect with chairs after an attack in a Hamburg supermarket.

The Palestinian man, who allegedly stabbed one person to death and wounded six others, was known German authorities as a suspected Islamic radical but was also psychologically unstable, officials said today.

The video shows a group of men surrounding the attacker with chairs, before throwing them at him.

They give chase as he tries to run away, brandishing his knife.

Further footage shows the suspect lying on the ground after being subdued by passersby.

Plain clothes officers were able to capture the man, who was lightly injured.

The alleged attacker — a 26-year-old UAE national — entered the supermarket in the city’s Barmbek district on Friday afternoon, grabbed a kitchen knife with a 20-centimetre (nearly 8-inch) blade from a shelf and slashed customers before fleeing.

He is accused of stabbed three men, one of them fatally.

He then left the supermarket and hurt another three people outside, not all of them with the knife.

Passers-by then pursued and overwhelmed him and he was arrested by police.

He was then overpowered by brave passers-by as he tried to make his escape before he was arrested.

The attack had been motivated by "hate," mayor Olaf Scholz said, although he stopped short of declaring it a terrorist incident.

"A crowd of about 30 people ran out of the supermarket. They yelled that someone had been stabbed... we saw a man go past with a big knife, like a butcher's knife, in his hand," eyewitness Ralf Woyna said.

Mr Woyna had been sitting at a cafe opposite the entrance to the shop where the chase began.

"Two customers who also looked Middle Eastern took all the chairs from the cafe and ran after him.

"I lost sight of them for a minute and heard a shout of 'Allahu Akbar' in the distance, I knew it was an attack straight away," he added.
