M6 chaos as serious crash causes 15-MILE tailbacks prompting frustrated travellers to abandon cars and play rugby and tennis on motorway

Motorists are stuck in 15 miles of tailbacks and delays of approximately 90 minutes have been reported

FRUSTRATED motorists stuck in 15-mile tailbacks after a major crash on the M6 have abandoned their cars and started playing rugby and tennis on the gridlocked motorway.

The northbound M6 was closed between junctions 19 and 20 in Cheshire following the collision.

The driver of the car has been airlifted to hospital with serious head and chest injuries.

A Cheshire Police spokesman said the northbound carriageway was expected to remain closed until at least 6pm while officers worked to establish the cause of the crash.

The crash caused chaos for holidaymakers and thousands of sports fans on the first day of the Football League and as England play South Africa in a cricket test match at Old Trafford in Manchester.

Dozens of Oldham FC supporters described how they were caught up in the delays travelling to the game against Oxford Utd in League One at Boundary Park from 3pm.

One image showed a large group of Latics fans stood in the central reservation.

One group, the Rugby Raccoons Flag American Football team, were reportedly having a kickabout.

A spokesman for North West Ambulance Service said a man had been taken by air ambulance to Aintree Hospital with serious injuries to his head and chest.

Five road ambulances were sent to the scene after the crash was reported at about 8.15am.

The southbound carriageway was initially closed for the air ambulance to land but was later reopened.

A statement from Cheshire Police said: ";Officers remain working at the scene to establish the cause of the collision.

";The northbound carriageway will remain closed to facilitate this work."
