Putney Bridge jogger – police arrest a 50-year-old man as they investigate attack on a woman pushed into the path of a bus

The suspect has been released under investigation by cops pending inquiries after he was held on suspicion of GBH

A SUSPECT arrested by police probing a horror attack on a woman shoved into the path of an oncoming bus by a jogger on Putney Bridge has been released pending inquiries.

The 50-year-old man was quizzed by detectives on suspicion of GBH after shocking CCTV of the incident was released.

The jogger continued running along the bridge and did not stop to help the woman

Scotland Yard said they had made enquiries at an address in Chelsea, South West London, this morning.

But they confirmed this afternoon the man had been released under investigation pending inquiries.

It comes after police said they were closing in on the jogger - dubbed the "Putney Pusher" - after they released a public appeal for information.

They released shocking footage showing the man pushing a 33-year-old woman into the busy road as he ran across the West London bridge.

An oncoming bus managed to swerve and somehow avoid hitting her as she lay sprawled on the ground.

But investigating officer Sergeant Mat Knowles said she was "put in extreme danger" when she was knocked into the road.

He added: "It was only due to the superb quick reactions of the bus driver that she was not hit by the vehicle."

The bus stopped and passengers tended to the woman following the incident at about 7.40am on May 5.

Cops said the jogger ran the other way across the bridge around 15 minutes later and the victim attempted to speak to him, but "he did not acknowledge her".

A Met Police spokesperson said: "Police investigating an assault after a jogger appeared to push a woman into the path of an oncoming bus in Putney have made an arrest.

Police had appealed for information to track down the man to quiz him about the incident

"A 50-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm following police enquiries at an address in the Chelsea area on the morning of Thursday, 10 August.

"He has been taken to a south London police station where he remains in custody.

"Officers previously issued CCTV of the incident and received a good response from the appeal."

It comes as proud colleagues praised the hero bus driver whose quick-thinking saved the woman shoved in the path of his double decker.

Co-workers said the driver's last-minute swerve "without a shadow of a doubt" saved the 33-year-old's life as she was pushed to the ground just inches from the bus.
