Time for Brussels to put up or shut up

COCKY Brussels chiefs have spent the past few months putting a price tag on our one-way ticket out of the EU.

Soon we’re about to find out what they’re prepared to give us for our money.

Brexit supremo David Davis will this week publish the first of 12 documents detailing our relationship plan.

He’s right to insist he won’t pay a penny into the EU’s coffers until he knows what we’ll get in return.

If we are to get the best deal from Brussels, we have to play our hand carefully.

Next week will show whether Eurocrats are serious about reaching an agreement that benefits both Britain and the rest of Europe.

Or if they are just out to sting us for as much as they can — and punish us for having the nerve to leave.

This is a chance for ministers to prove that — contrary to Remoaners’ predictions — they have been working hard behind the scenes to draw up a proper Brexit plan.

It will also turn the focus back on the EU to see if they have a vision of their own once they lose our hefty contributions.

With our hard cash as a bargaining chip, we’ll see if they think no deal is better than a bad deal.
Or if they are prepared to cut off their nose to spite their hard faces.

Lesson for universities

OUR top universities should be open to everyone of the same ability — no matter where they went to school.

But new analysis shows that children at the top 50 private schools are THREE times more likely than those at a comprehensive to get a place at a leading university.

Teenagers at fee-paying schools are three times more likely to get a place at university despite comprehensive kids catching them up

When she became PM, Theresa May vowed to make “Britain a country that works for everyone”.

The brightest kids must all be given the same shot at going to a top university.

Universities MUST stop discriminating against those from ordinary backgrounds.

Our future depends on it.
