'I CAN'T SPLIT MYSELF IN THREE'

Mum with kids at THREE different schools and no car reveals her ‘impossible’ school run

After the family moved homes Melanie Milloy’s daughter was accepted at a new school, her son was forced to stay in his old class and her toddler started a new nursery

A MUM with three children at three different schools has spoken of her “impossible” task at getting them to class on time now that she is faced with a SIX-MILE round trip.

Melanie Milloy, 34, said “there is no way” she can make the journey after moving homes from Rawthorpe to Lowerhouses in Huddersfield at the end of the last school year.

The move saw her daughter Grace, 10, accepted at a new school while brother Reuben, seven, was forced to stay in his old one, reports.

In addition, Melanie’s youngest son, Harrison, who is two-and-a-half and has severe autism, is due to start attending a day nursery.

Melanie applied for places for Grace and Reuben, who had been attending Rawthorpe Junior School, at Hillside Primary School in Newsome.

While there was a place available at Hillside in Grace’s year group, there was no place available in Reuben’s year group.

Melanie, who does not drive, said: “There is no way I can get from the nursery at Lowerhouses to Hillside and then to Rawthorpe all within 15 minutes to make sure they are at school on time.”

Melanie – who said could not afford taxi fares as she is on benefits – said most of friends and family are at work or not able to drive so cannot help.

She added: “I cannot split myself into three, but if I don’t get Reuben to school I am going to be fined. I don’t know how they expect me to get to three places in the space of 15 minutes.”

The stay-at-home mum has written to her local MP but said it is going to be at least eight weeks before her appeal could be heard.

A Kirklees Council spokesperson told The Huddersfield Daily Examiner said: “Ms Milloy recently submitted applications for her children to change schools due to a recent house move.

“We have been able to offer her daughter a place at one of her requested schools, but the year group for her son at the same school is currently full.

“Her son has been put on the waiting list for a place at this school and Ms Milloy has also lodged an admission appeal which will be scheduled shortly and in line with the School Admission Appeals Code.

“We are continuing to work with Ms Milloy to find a suitable school place for both her children as soon as possible.”
