George Osborne apologies to Theresa May for saying he wanted to chop her up and put in freezer

The PM's arch-enemy used his London Evening Standard column to apologise for the jibe telling readers it was meant 'in jest'

THERESA May has accepted a grudging apology from George Osborne for vowing to chop her up and put her in his freezer.

The former Chancellor sparked fury among Tory MPs when it emerged he had said he “won't rest until she's chopped up in bags”.

But yesterday, the PM’s arch enemy used an editorial column in his Evening Standard newspaper to claim the savage remark was only made “in jest”.

The politician-turned-editor also pledged to “reflect that strong differences of opinion do not need intemperate language”.

One Tory MP described Mr Osborne’s climbdown as “meely-mouthed”.

But quizzed on it while in New York yesterday, the PM said: "I, of course, accept an apology if that's been given.

“I must confess I haven't actually read it myself. I don’t pay attention to these things.

“What matters is that I'm getting on with the job and focusing on what the British people want."

The freezer bags remark was made by the former Chancellor to staff on his paper.

Mrs May’s former chief of staff Nick Timothy branded Mr Osborne “an a***hole” when the slight emerged last week.

And backbench Tory MP Nadine Dorries is urging the party’s chief whip to ban Mr Osborne from coming to its annual conference in Manchester next month.
