ISLAND QUAKE

Pacific Island of Vanuatu struck by powerful 6.4 magnitude earthquake

This is the fourth earthquake of considerable magnitude to have happened in the last 24 HOURS

THE idyllic tropical island of Vanuatu has been rocked by a huge earthquake - the fourth to hit the globe in less than 24 hours.

Residents on the remote island off the Pacific coast were hit with the earthquake just after 7am (20:09 GMT time) which had a large magnitude of 6.4.

The news comes only hours after Japan was hit with a earthquake of a 6.1 magnitude soon after New Zealand also suffered an earthquake of the same magnitude, and Mexico battled a savage 7.1 magnitude quake.

Vanuatu is made up of 80 lush islands with deserted beaches and blue lagoons.

The earthquake hit the centre of Vanuatu's fourth largest island, Erromango, which has a tiny population of just under 2,000 people.

It is sadly not the first time the island has been hit by natural disasters.

With several active volcanoes littered around the islands, such disasters are common.

In 2015, Vanatu was hit by, which devastated the island and directly killed at least eight people.
