MP’s fury as previously cleared British soldiers fear fresh inquiry over Iraqi civilian’s death
Ministry of Defence lawyers may order a fresh inquiry over a teenager's death in 2003, despite last week telling the three men that they would not face charges
BRIT soldiers cleared of wrongdoing over the death of an Iraqi teenager 14 years ago could face yet another inquiry.
Three troops, including two still serving and a decorated major, have been investigated at least three times after Said Shabram, 19, drowned in Basra in 2003.
The men faced a three-year inquiry by the now-disbanded Iraq Historic Allegations Team (IHAT).
Last week they were told they would not face charges.
But MoD lawyers are assessing the IHAT file and can order the Iraqi Fatality Investigations unit to open an inquiry.
The case raises fears that dozens of other cleared troops could face probes. Tory MP and ex-soldier Johnny Mercer called it a scandal.
