TOURISTS arriving at Mallorca's airport were put in danger when their coach was pelted with eggs.

Business leaders say whoever was responsible for the attack on six buses put the lives of the drivers, holidaymakers and other road users at risk.

The Tourist Transport Federation for the Balearic Islands said on its Twitter site: "This endangered lives!"

Three different bus companies reported incidents on the same night after picking up tourists, either to take them back to the airport or to their hotels.

All three have lodged an official complaint with the police who have launched an investigation.

Federation president, Salvador Servera said the attacks happened in the space of an hour between 10pm and 11pm.

He says tourists on board had been terrified as the eggs were hurled at the front of the coaches, including on the windscreen.

The three transport companies say it was a serious crime against road safety and could have caused a very serious or even fatal accident.

The FEBT transport association says there is no labour conflict which could have prompted the attacks and at the moment, the motivation remains unclear.

They fear incidents like this can damage the tourist industry of the Balearics.

No-one has claimed responsibility so it is not known if any "anti mass tourism" group is behind it.

However, the Balearics have seen protests against mass tourism, including a demonstration when a group stormed a seafront restaurant in Palma, letting off pink flares which damaged luxury yachts and throwing confetti at diners.

That protest was carried out by Arran Països Catalans which hasn't claimed any responsibility for the egg throwing.

In August, they daubed anti-tourist messages across Mallorca, including on walls, rubbish bins and car-parks.

The campaigners, wearing hoods, also held up a tourist bus in Barcelona, before daubing the vehicle with slogans and slashed the tyres of holidaymaker's bikes.
