Soldier left with ‘blade sticking out of his head after being stabbed by footie hooligan after Scotland v England match’
Soldier David Ferguson, 27, was almost killed after being stabbed twice by football hooligan Aidan Warner, 20, near his barracks just hours after big game at Wembley
A SOLDIER almost died after being stabbed twice in the neck by a drugged up football hooligan - hours after watching a Scotland v England game.
Scots Guard David Ferguson, 27, was left with part of the blade sticking out the wound after he was knifed by thug Aidan Warner, 20, near his barracks.
David, a lance corporal, had to be airlifted from his barracks in Aldershot, Hants, to hospital after being left with a gaping wound at the top of his spine.
Winchester Crown Court heard David had been watching Scotland and England play at Wembley in a nearby pub in the hours before he was attacked.
David and fellow soldiers invited Warner and a pal back to their Mons Barrack for a few drinks when Warner attacked the squaddie with a kitchen knife for no reason around 6am.
Prosecutor Simon Edwards said: “The victim had obtained two separate stab wounds to his neck - one at the back by the top of his spine, and one to the right side of the neck.
“The end of the blade had snapped off and was protruding from his neck.”
The court heard the knife was retrieved from his neck when it was eventually dislodged - and he was airlifted 35 miles away to St George’s Hospital in London.
Warner was later traced outside the gates of the barracks, and told cops: “I know I’m in the wrong. It all got out of hand. I will do time for this.”
He later said he’d been “steaming drunk” and had spent £100 on alcohol and taken two lines of cocaine.
Prosecutor Edwards added: “He could offer no explanation for what happened, other than there was some bickering.”
He added that Aldershot footie fan Warner was said to “glorify in violence” and had four convictions for violence at matches.
Judge Andrew Barnett jailed Warner for six years after he admitted a charge of wounding with intent on November 11 last year.
He said: “You stabbed Cpl Ferguson in such a way he had to be rushed to hospital in London and the consequences could have been far more serious.
"You could have killed him. The pictures of the injuries are horrific.”
L Cpl Ferguson, from Berwick-upon-Tweed, was so traumatised by the stabbing he is set to leave the armed forces altogether.
Judge Barnett said L Cpl Ferguson leaving the army was a “real loss”.
