YouTube can ‘hide’ bomb-making videos for months, claims terror chief
Counter terror head Mark Rowley told MPs the web giants may never tell cops about those they find
YOUTUBE can “hide” bomb-making videos for months, Britain’s terror chief said yesterday.
Met Police counter terror head Mark Rowley told MPs they may never tell cops about those they find.
He said: “Sometimes they will spot somebody who’s sharing bomb-making instructions months before we know about it because it’s happening on their systems.
“More proactivity in those sorts of areas could make a big difference.”
Fears over such videos grew after it emerged Manchester suicide bomber Salman Abedi made the device that killed 22 people using YouTube videos and instructions from the dark web.
Asked by the Commons Home Affairs Committee if firms were doing enough on extremist content, Mr Rowley said: “They could do more.”
MP Yvette Cooper said it was “appalling” some of the richest firms in the world took so long to remove illegal material.”
