Fears Tenerife’s Mount Teide volcano is about to ERUPT after more than 20 quakes rock the island in just four days

A SEISMIC swarm has rocked Tenerife - fuelling fears Mount Teide could erupt across the popular Brit holiday destination.

More than 20 quakes struck the island between October 28 and October 31, which indicates the volcano is now active, experts from Volcanological Institute of the Canary Islands (Involcan) claimed.

The earthquake tremors clustered around Vilaflor in southern Tenerife, at an average depth of 6-8 km below sea level.

Experts revealed the largest tremor registered 1.4 on the Richter Scale, striking the village at 11.05am local time on Tuesday morning.

In a bid to calm locals, experts from Involcan said on Facebook: "This swarm is similar to the other seismic swarms recorded in Tenerife in June and as always it is important to emphasise, it does not represent any kind of concern for the population."

The scientists noted that the characteristics of the earthquakes reflected a relationship with the hydro-thermal system, which has "undergone a pressurisation process".

Mount Teide is not the only volcano which is potentially at the brink of eruption, as Iceland's Bardarbunga volcano was rocked by four huge earthquakes last week.

Volcano expert Páll Einarsson warned that the quakes mean Bardarbunga is "clearly preparing for its next eruption."

News of Tenerife's active volcano comes after a survey revealed Brits are planning to travel to sunny destinations over the winter holidays.

Among 1,000 Brits who took part in the survey, 30 per cent said they were planning to visit Tenerife because Christmas is "boring".
