Hugh Grant refuses to weigh in on Hollywood sex abuse scandal because of his own actions
The 57-year-old actor was arrested in 1995 after being caught in a car with a prostitute in Los Angeles
HUGH Grant has said he cannot comment on the sex scandals sweeping Hollywood as he has 'murk in his past'.
The 57-year-old actor hit headlines in 1995 when he was arrested while dating Liz Hurley after being caught in a car with a prostitute Divine Brown in Los Angeles.
When asked about revelations of inappropriate sexual behaviour by Hollywood A-listers such as Harvey Weinstein and Kevin Spacey he said he felt unable to "pontificate".
Speaking to Radio 4's Front Row, he said: "When it comes to sexual ethics I don’t want to be the person to pontificate.
"There’s murk in my past."
He added: "As a general rule, and this isn’t a very daring thing to say, sexual harassment should have zero tolerance in whatever form, anywhere. In whatever country, in whatever business.
"My hat goes off to those women who are brave enough to speak out at least on the Weinstein thing."
When presenter Samira Ahmed asked: "You're honest and yet I feel there’s a lot you’ve learnt not to say’, to which Grant replied: "We live in a world of bear traps."
Grant, then 34, was arrested for indecent conduct and did not contest the charges.
He was given two years' probation and ordered to pay £760 and complete an AIDS education programme.
Grant is currently promoting his role in new film Paddington 2.
Dozens of women have come forward to accuse legendary producer Harvey Weinstein of a string of sexual attacks, including rape.
Following the revelations a number of men have also made sexual harassment allegations about House of Cards star Kevin Spacey.
Some alleged victims have said the reported attacks were part of a wider culture of inappropriate sexual behaviour in the film industry.
