Zoella slammed for pathetic ‘apology’ over old tweets insulting gay men and ‘chavs’
YOUTUBE star Zoella has been slammed for her 'pathetic apology' over a series of tweets mocking gay men and 'fat chavs'.
The 27-year-old posted the tweets - including one telling a woman to 'keep her legs shut' - between 2010 and 2012 but they have since been deleted.
She posted an apology when the tweets resurfaced saying "I would never say those things now and I'm sorry if I have offended anyone".
But Twitter users criticised the 'fake' apology, saying the millionaire was only concerned about her public image.
One wrote: "She could probably afford a heart of gold too after charging that much for them calendars. She’s a synovial business woman. Her act is that she cares about everyone and that makes her loads of money. Wise up."
Another added: "I’m shocked that their is people out their defending zoella’s homophobic and transphobic tweets. I fear for the future that young kids think these words are acceptable."
One Twitter user replied: "Saying the tweets were 'taken out of context' is not an apology. Also saying 'If' you offended anyone when you know you did is unacceptable. Just own up to them."
Another tweeted: "Let’s not forget tranny. Or intrinsically homophobic dialect. This isn’t anywhere close to an apology. We’re all different to who we were 7 years ago, that’s not an excuse”.
One of Zoella's tweets, posted in 2010, said: "I find it funny when gay men spit…it’s like they’re trying to be a bit macho but never works…"
Another read: "'Why are these clothes so expensive' because they’re designer you tramp, that there in your hand is a dress worth over £2000. Haha".
One tweet in 2011 read: "Why did that fat chav go and stand next to him? Was she George's wing man? Urgh. #xfactor".
The vlogger also said an unnamed woman should "keep her legs shut" in a tweet from 2012.
Zoella later apologised for the tweets, saying: "I’ve seen a few of my old tweets from 7/8 years ago floating around (which I have now deleted) using words like “chav” “skank” and other words I wouldn’t use now as part of my language and lot of them were taken out of context referring to TV shows but I would never say those things now and I’m sorry if I have offended anyone, that was not my intention.
"Obviously that is not who I am today and I’d like to think I’m a little older and wiser! I’m not perfect and I’ve never claimed to be, I’m only human!"
Zoella, whose site reportedly earns £50,000 a month, recently came under fire for a "rip off" advent calendar costing £50.
The calendar only has 12 products inside, which are worth roughly £21.57 in total.
And in August, she was slammed by fans for posting a “jokey gif” of Bill Cosby on Twitter – before swiftly deleting it.
Zoella quickly responded writing: “Thanks for letting me know about that GIF guys, I wasn't aware of him. Maybe twitter should remove that from the "makeup" drop down...”
Zoe Sugg, aka Zoella, was crowned the most powerful beauty player in Forbes’ 2017 list of social media stars and has her own waxwork in Madame Tussauds.
She currently lives in Brighton with her boyfriend and fellow online vlogger Alfie Deyes who runs PointlessBlog.
