‘Cash-strapped’ school asks parents to pay £1-A-DAY for pens and pencils
The move is said to have divided parents with many refusing to take on the added financial burden
A "CASH strapped" school is asking parents to pay £1-a-day to pay for basic equipment including pens, pencils and exercise books.
The move is said to have divided parents with many refusing to take on the added financial burden.
Robert Piggott infant and junior schools in Wargrave, Berks, has made a plea for parents to hand over £190 a year, has revealed.
In a letter it said the money would pay for basics such as "glue, pens, pencils, exercise books, paper, tape and paint".
The voluntary contributions will also reportedly be used to fund software, science equipment, musical instruments and staffing costs.
The school has blamed changes to funding for its cash flow crisis.
One frustrated parent told The Mirror: “I won’t be paying for it and that’s it.”
Another said they didn't agree with the request but would pay for the sake of their kids.
Executive head Sally Ann Aker said: “Like many schools, we are experiencing rising costs in the face of reduced funding.
“Whilst committed to the principle of state-funded education we have reached the stage where we need to ask parents and the community to consider making voluntary donations.”
