Last night a spokeswoman for bookies Ladbrokes said: “Royal watchers would love an engagement announcement before Christmas. As far as we’re concerned it’s coming very soon.”
Ladbrokes closed betting that the pair would marry next year after odds hit 4/6.
TV sources added to feverish speculation by revealing that BBC staff had been primed to expect an announcement soon.
