A FORMER Pentagon chief has admitted nuclear war with North Korea is more likely than ever and he is "scared to death".

Retired admiral Mike Mullen, who was chairman of the US joint chiefs of staff, warned "unpredictable" despot Kim Jong-un could launch nukes at the US or its allies.

He told ABC's This Week: “I think it’s more probable than it used to be, and it scares me to death quite frankly.

“They’re the most dangerous weapons in the world.

"And, certainly if we have someone in North Korea that has a lethal legacy, is very, very unpredictable and sees this as a way to solidify his future, he could well not just obtain them, but potentially use them.”

Tensions have been ratcheted up in recent months by North Korea's nuclear tests and ballistic missile launches - and by the war of words between Kim and Donald Trump.

Last week North Korea's envoy to the UN said there is no chance of peace talks while the US continues war games on its doorstep.

Russia accused the US of trying to provoke Kim into nuclear war with its provocative military drills.

On his recent 12-day tour of Asia, Mr Trump told US troops in Japan: “No dictator should underestimate American resolve".

He said: “We dominate the sky, we dominate the sea, we dominate the land and space.

“Each of you embodies the warrior creed. Your devotion, prowess, and expertise make you the most fearsome fighting force in the history of our world.”

The USA declared North Korea a state sponsor of terror - which the regime slammed as a "grave provocation and aggressive violation".

The North has dug trenches to stop further escapes after a soldier was filmed being shot as he fled over the border pursued by his comrades.
