Cancer nurse forced to prove she didn’t kill her baby after sick stalker’s malicious claims
Carolyn Fowkes fell out with college friend Nuala Rees and bombarded her and her family with death threats, intimidating messages and lies
A CANCER nurse was forced to prove to social workers she had a stillborn baby after a stalker made malicious reports that she had killed her.
Paula McKervey, 43, was targeted as part of a sustained campaign of hate against her family by a woman who held a 15-year grudge against her sister.
Vile Carolyn Fowkes fell out with Paula's sister Nuala Rees and went on to bombard the 39-year-old and her relatives with death threats and intimidating messages.
She made false reports to social workers about them and had their mum Tina Robinson suspended for allegedly abusing residents in the care home where she worked.
Fowkes also created a string of false Facebook accounts, including one in Nuala's name, and sent hundreds of vile messages.
Paula tragically lost a baby girl, Poppy, and had to prove to authorities that she was stillborn and wasn’t harmed by her after malicious reports by Fowkes.
Fowkes admitted stalking at Glasgow Sheriff CourtFowkes, 39, of Royston, Glasgow, admitted “engaging in a course of conduct which caused Nuala Rees fear or alarm” between August 2012 and December 2015 at the city’s Sheriff Court this week.
Speaking yesterday, Paula said: “It was relentless, we were just worried all of the time. I was constantly on edge.”
The court heard that around 17 years ago, Fowkes and Nuala became friends while living in Coventry.
But they had a disagreement 15 years ago which resulted in them not talking to one another.
Procurator fiscal depute Louise MacNeill told the court Fowkes re-started contact in August 2012 in the form of letters before quickly taking to social media to send threatening messages.
Nuala herself received a total of 267 messages from various Facebook accounts.
In January 2013, Paula received a letter that said “I don’t mind going to prison for killing your sister”.
Another said: “I hate your sister. I would go to prison for murdering your sister and you - you can run but you can’t hide.
“I will get you both for what she did and then I will murder your sons and her son.”
Speaking about her ordeal, Paula said the letters began around 2010 or 2011 and started with her and her husband.
She said: “She tracked us down through my husband’s business because that’s where she thought we lived, the letters came through the accountant to start.
“They were initially threatening to kill my sister.
“It started with letters then went to Facebook, she reported us to social services saying we’d beaten our children.
“My 15-year-old son was pulled out of school by social workers and questioned, I had police at my house saying I was hitting my children outside.
“My little boy was six and he had to be questioned on his own to make sure it was all true what I was saying that I didn’t hit him and hurt him. Children shouldn’t be subjected to that.
“Nuala was reported for being unfit to look after her children.
“We were saying ‘can’t you see this is a load of rubbish?' I thought you’ve been to my house, you’ve been through my fridge, you’ve been through my childrens’ bedrooms’."
Mrs McKervey had further heartache when she had to prove that a baby girl she had as stillborn hadn’t been harmed by her as claimed by Fowkes.
Geraldine Green - another sibling - received messages including one that said “You are a child murderer” which she thought was about Mrs McKervey’s stillborn daughter.
Paula said it was a "blessing" that Fowkes admitted her guilt and saved them from travelling to Glasgow to give evidence.
Sentence was deferred until later this month and Fowkes’ bail was continued.
