Time says its coveted gong recognises "the person or group of people who most influenced the news during the past year, for better or for worse".

It is marked with a front cover and in-depth analysis on the winner in the final issue of the year.

Trump, who was named Person of the Year 2016, is also in the race against Robert Mueller — the ex-FBI boss tasked with trawling through allegations of Russian collusion in the Presidential election.

NFL star Colin Kaepernick, who riled President Trump with his kneeling protests against alleged police brutality, is also in the running, as is the #MeToo web campaign against sexual harassment.

Chinese President Xi Jinping and Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman top off the world leaders in the shortlist.

Also named are billionaire Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, who became the richest man in the world this year, and Wonder Women director Patty Jenkins, the only individual woman finalist.

The only other group entry is The Dreamers, undocumented child immigrants in the US who Time says "face uncertain futures" amid White House plans to end Obama-era protection.

President Trump hinted that he had been tipped for this year's title last month when he tweeted: "Time Magazine called to say that I was PROBABLY going to be named “Man (Person) of the Year".

He added: "I said probably is no good and took a pass. Thanks anyway!”

The magazine disputed his claim, hitting back: "The president is incorrect about how we choose Person of the Year.”

Time is expected to unveil the 2017 Person of the Year on Wednesday.
