Arctic winds to bring snow and sub-zero temperatures back to the UK after mild mid-week weather

Large parts of the UK could see up to an inch of snow and sleet sweep through as temperatures drop again in a few days

Milder weather could be on the way

ARCTIC winds are expected to plunge the country back into sub-zero temperatures after a brief mid-week rise in temperature.

Forecasters have predicted a double-digit rise in temperatures today before the country is hit by unrelenting winds from the north.

Large swathes of Scotland, Wales, northern England, the Midlands, and the eastern coast could be hit with up to an inch of snow, sleet and torrential rain, the reports.

More Arctic winds are behind the new cold snap, with lows of -6C expected in northern Scotland over the weekend.

Other parts of the UK could also experience sub-zero temperatures, as well as wintry showers.

"Fear not, there is some good news on the horizon," says Met Office forecaster Oli Claydon who predicts a massive increase in temperature through the week.

He added: "It's going to feel a lot milder on Wednesday with temperatures in places getting up into double digits, possibly up to 52F (11C).

"That will continue into Thursday before we get another blast of cold air on Friday.

"Temperatures won't be as low as they've been this week but the wind will make it feel a couple of degrees colder than it actually is."

It comes after Britain saw its coldest night of the year so far on Monday night, with temperatures plummeting as low as -13C near Shrewsbury in Shropshire.

Yesterday saw another cold start for much of the country, with heavy frost, ice and freezing fog patches.

It is expected to be a bright day for many, but will turn cloudier and windier in the west as the day goes on, with rain and hill snow later this afternoon.

Last night was expected to see heavy rain and hill snow, which would gradually move eastwards, according to the Met Office.

Today is set to be windy, with spells of heavy and showery rain, which may turn wintry over northern hills.

The end of the week is expected to see a ix of sunny spells and blustery showers, which may turn to snow.

London is recovering from its heaviest snowfall since 2013 and with forecasters warning more is to come, leading bookmaker Coral is offering odds of 4-1 for snow to fall in the capital on Christmas Day.

The major cities in the north of the UK are still the UK’s best chance of snow on the big day according to the firms betting, with Aberdeen at odds of 7-4, Glasgow and Edinburgh both 2-1 and Newcastle 5-2.

“London hasn’t had a White Christmas for a long time now but after the snow over the weekend punters are rushing to get their bets on that this year is the one,” said Coral’s Harry Aitkenhead.

UK temperatures rise slightly, but still cold weather means sleet and snow across the north
