Initially examination revealed he had an elevated heart rate and tenderness in the anus.

Further scans revealed his bowel had completely collapsed and was filling with blood, according to the

Doctors became concerned when an X-ray revealed a "smooth shadow" in the right side of the man's abdomen.

Doctors at Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust surgically removed the unusually large sex toy and eight inches of his large intestine to remove the damaged part.

He was given a course of antibiotics to prevent infection and kept in hospital for 11 days until his bowel began to operate normally again.

Nine of those days were spent on feeding tubes and a stoma bag as the patient's bowel could not function properly.

He was allowed home on the eleventh day after he was able to have the stoma bag removed.

The patient was also warned about the dangers of inserting things into his bottom.

Doctors noted that the sex toy had been inserted into the rectum when the man was "under heavy alcohol influence" which led to a "loss of control".

The toy had completely disappeared into the man's rectum by the time he got to hospital.

They believe this case is the first of it's kind down to the toys "enormous size", but it is not the first time someone has been admitted to hospital with a foreign object in their bum.

"Those involved are more commonly male with ages ranging from 16 to 90 years in the literature, with most cases seen in patients aged between 20 and 40 years," the wrote in the report.

"A vast variety of objects have been reported in case studies, for example, glass bottles, cans, aerosol sprays, candles, bulbs, sports goods, wooden rods, food items, hoover extensions, broomsticks and sexual toys including vibrators and dildos.

"The most significant problem encountered with such cases is the delay in presentation due to embarrassment and the fact that usually these patients often first try to retrieve the object themselves which often causes migration of these objects further proximally and can induce damage to the bowel wall.

"The most common signs and symptoms include abdominal pain, per-rectal bleeding and rarely obstruction with or without sepsis that are associated with chronically retained objects or with  ther complications such as perforation and peritonitis."
