Shigellosis vomiting bug outbreak confirmed at UK schools sparking warning to parents
AN outbreak of the vomiting bug Shigellosis in UK schools has been confirmed.
Parents at a school in Surrey have been sent letters warning them about the bug.
18 cases of the infectious disease, caused by a group of bacteria called Shigella, have been confirmed.
The bug can last for a week and is most commonly found in schools.
Symptoms include diarrhoea, stomach cramping, fever and nausea.
The letter from the school, located near Guildford and Woking, explained why children were falling sick, reported .
It said: “We are aware of a number of families where older children and adults have also been affected.”
The NHS advises people suffering from the bug to stay hydrated and that the condition usually lasts 5-7 days.
They say the bug can move between individuals as a result of poor hygiene such as not washing hands regularly.
It can be treated with antibiotics but the disease is rarely serious or dangerous.
